Ali bought a house across the street from Elijah Muhammad, as well as an apartment building on the South Side. He also tried to open up a small restaurant. Ali bought this 28-room 1917 Tudor Revival home in late 1969 or early 1970. This was about five years after a fire broke out in his South Shore apartment, hours after Malcolm X was assassinated in New York. Ali was very much a part of his neighborhood; WTTW quoted a television interview in which a former neighbor said that Ali would stand out at his gates and talk to people at length. Ali is the source of dozens of films, songs, biographies, children’s books, and even comic books.
