Saturday, July 25, 2020
11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Washington Square Park
901 N. Clark Street
Chicago, IL 60610

The Newberry Library again celebrates the history of the radical free speech space that was Washington Square Park, a.k.a. Bughouse Square, with a day of soapboxing, heckling, and honoring our marketplace of ideas. The Chicago Literary Hall of Fame will takes its place at one of the tables set up throughout the little park. The Bughouse Square Debates feature a main debate and presentation of the John Altgeld Freedom of Speech Award, along with many other soapbox speeches. The event takes place in conjunction with the annual Newberry Library Book Fair, which takes place throughout the weekend. More information to come.
